THE PROBLEM
Mental health in South Africa is a national crisis, with over 27% of the population experiencing symptoms of depression at some point in their lives. Despite this high prevalence, 90% of individuals with mental illness do not receive adequate care, largely due to underfunding; only 5% of the health budget is allocated to mental health services. Rural communities, youth aged 15–24, and those not in employment, education, or training (NEET) are especially vulnerable, facing geographic, economic, and cultural barriers to accessing support. The COVID-19 pandemic has worsened these challenges, contributing to rising rates of anxiety, depression, and suicide. Without urgent investment in mental health infrastructure, education, and community-based care, these issues will continue to undermine public health and deepen cycles of poverty and inequality.
OUR SOLUTION
Mood tracking app that rewards you for self-care activities and gives you points that are redeemable at your local stores. The app would give users points for these activities, which they could then redeem at local stores such as Woolworths, Checkers or even the gym. This solution addresses the problem of mental health in South Africa. The app would be particularly helpful for vulnerable groups like the youth aged 15-24, those who are unemployed and those who face significant challenges to accessing mental health support.
